Local women gather to sell raw seafood on unusual stone formations that jut from Jeju’s south-west coast into the sea. Each red basin contains a different kind of ocean delicacy, which they will slice up and serve you for a minimal fee. Korea, June 12, 2006

A tree thrives, despite the sharp incline, on a cliff overlooking Jeju’s south-west coast. Korea, June 12, 2006

The Buddha with the best view in town…nestled serenely at the top of a natural grotto in the stone cliff overlooking the extreme south-west tip of Jeju Island. Every step of the climb (sheltered by reinforced steel rings in case of falling rocks) is worth it – once there you can refresh yourself by drinking the icy pure ‘medicine water’ that drips from the ceiling into a stone basin at Buddha’s feet. A woman prays at the base of an ancient Buddhist grotto nestled into a cave high on a cliff overlooking Jeju’s south-west coast. The fig tree is real, and grows out of solid rock. June 12, 2006

Before falling rocks necessitated covering the trail with copious amounts of fortified steel caging, this tree and it’s view over Jeju’s south-west coast was one of the most famous on the island. With far fewer tourists than it used to attract, it is still a delightful climb to a Buddhist grotto high in the cliff. Korea, June 12, 2006

Though I’m not sure exactly what makes this rock famous, it is one of the better-known scenic spots on Jeju-do. We found it by accident, looking for our (relatively) secluded hotel one evening. Seogwipo, Korea, June 12, 2006

One of Jeju’s famous woman divers – these women (some as old as 75!) gather seaweed and shellfish with no air tanks for as long as 3 minutes at a time. Although the pay is good ($40 000 US per year for 3 or 4 months of work), few young women are following in their elder’s footsteps, so we were lucky to see any at work. Seogwipo, Korea, June 12, 2006
